General Information about India

India is of the same size as one-third the area of the United States. The Republic of India occupies most of the subcontinent of India in southern Asia. India borders with China in the northeast. Other neighbors of India are Pakistan on the west, Nepal and Bhutan on the north, and Burma and Bangladesh on the east.

The country can be divided into three distinct geographic regions: the Himalayan region in the north, which contains some of the highest mountains in the world, the Gangetic Plain, and the plateau region in the south and central part. Its three great river systems-the Ganges, the Indus, and the Brahmaputra-have extensive deltas and all rise in the Himalayas.

India's government system is a Federal Republic.

India's largest cities are: Bombay (Mumbai), with the population of 18,336,000 in the metro. area, and 11,914,398 living in the city proper, Calcutta (Kolkata), with 14,299,000 people in metro. area, and 4,760,800 in the city proper, Bangalore, with 4,461,100 population, Madras (Chennai), with 4,382,100 population, Ahmedabad, with population of 3,653,700, Hyderabad, with 3,585,600 population, and Kanpur, with 2,631,800 population.

Monetary unit in India is Rupee.

Official languages in India are: Hindi spoken by 30% of the population, English, Bengali, Gujarati, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Kannada, Assamese, Sanskrit, and Sindhi, Hindi/Urdu; and other 1,600 non-official langages + dialects.

India combines 72% of Indo-Aryan population, 25% of Dravidian, and 3% of Mongoloid and other ethnisities.

81% of the Indian population is of Hindu religion, 13% are Islamics, 2% of Christians, and 2% of Sikh.
